General Motors has reached a settlement in a second case involving a faulty ignition switch. The lawsuit first filed in 2010 helped launch a massive recall of vehicles dating back to 2001. The suit accused GM of knowing that the ignition switch in several of their cars was faulty, yet covering up the evidence in order to save money.
29-year-old Brooke Melton was driving her Chevy Cobalt when the faulty ignition switch caused the car to lose power. The loss of power led to her losing control of the vehicle and sending her into oncoming traffic. The resulting accident caused her death. Her parents filed a suit against GM which was settled out of court for $5 million dollars. Shortly after the settlement GM called for a recall of some 2.6 million vehicles.
In May of 2014 the Melton’s refiled their suit claiming that a primary witness for GM knew about the faulty ignition switch and lied in court to cover it up. GM has now settled that case, although the terms of the settlement have not been released.
