The number one cause of auto accidents today is distracted drivers. The road alone can cause numerous distractions. Add in those that we may bring upon ourselves or have in the vehicle with us and many drivers are an accident waiting to happen. When you are driving you should make certain that all of your attention is on the road and the other cars you are sharing the road with. Talking on your cell phone, even if you are using a hands free device can be very distracting. Texting is even worse because you have to take your eyes off the road. Watching anything on a screen that may be built into the car or that you brought with you (tablet, phone, laptop) can be deadly.
There are also plenty of not-so-obvious distractions that many of us deal with on a daily basis when we drive. A few examples would be trying to look at a map or read written directions, trying to deal with kids or pets that are in the car with you, goofing around with friends or family that are in the vehicle, and eating.
Anything that takes your attention from the road increases your chance of being involved in an accident. It can only take a split second for an accident to occur so try your best to eliminate distractions while you drive and you will do a better job of keeping yourself, your passengers and other drivers safe on the roads.
